Tasmania - a former British colony, since 1901 - a state of the Commonwealth of Australia on the island of the same name off the southeast coast of Australia. Until 1856 it was called Van Diemen's Land. After the introduction of self-government in 1856, the colony was renamed Tasmania. Own stamps were issued from 1853. On the stamps of 1853-57, the name of the territory (English) is "Van Diemen's Land", from 1857 - "Tasmania". In 1899-1901 ed. a series of stamps with landscape drawings. In 1863-89, fiscal stamps were used as postage stamps. Tasmanian stamps were in circulation until 1913 throughout Australia.
