(New South Walles) - since 1901 the state of the Commonwealth of Australia (in the southeast of the mainland). British colony since 1788, self-governing since 1855. The first stamps were issued in 1850. In 1888, 1889 a commemorative series was published for the 100th anniversary of the colony. This is the first commemorative stamp series in the world. In 1898, 2 postal-charity stamps were issued, an additional fee from which went to the fund for the construction of hospitals. Service stamps were issued in 1880–94, and surcharge stamps were issued in 1891–96. Australian stamps have been used since 1912.
